The Ministry of Coal launched the country's first underground coal gasification (UCG) pilot project at Kasta coal block in Jharkhand's Jamtara district. Led by Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), the initiative aims to convert coal into methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide and dioxide through in-situ gasification. These gases have wide industrial uses, including synthetic natural gas production, fuel and fertilizer synthesis, and explosives manufacturing, with the aim to revolutionise India's coal industry with sustainable applications.

Ministry of Coal is fully committed to promote coal gasification projects and fully utilize the potential of coal by converting it into various high value chemical products.

As this pilot project progresses, it aims to set new benchmarks in coal resource utilisation and will contribute significantly towards India's energy self-sufficiency. The Ministry of Coal is committed to promoting innovation and efficiency in the sector, paving the way for an accessible and environmentally sustainable energy future for the nation.
