The first of the two advanced ships under construction by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) for the Indian Navy was launched on 23 July 2024 at GSL, Goa. In keeping with maritime tradition, the ship was launched by Smt. Rita Sreedharan with an invocation from the Atharvaveda in the presence of Shri P S Sreedharan Pillai, Hon’ble Governor of Goa. The ship has been named Triput after the mighty arrow, which represents the indomitable spirit and ability to strike far and deep of the Indian Navy.
Ministry of Defence and Goa Shipyard Limited signed the contract for construction of two Triput class advanced ships on 25 Jan 19. The ship is designed for combat operations against enemy surface ships, submarines and aircraft. Triput class ships are 124.8 m long and 15.2 m wide with a draft of 4.5 m. Their displacement is about 3600 tonnes and their maximum speed is 28 knots. The ships are equipped with stealth strike capabilities, advanced weapons and sensors and platform management systems.
The Triput class ships being built at GSL are follow-on ships to the Teg and Talwar class ships acquired from Russia. This is the first time these ships are being built indigenously by an Indian shipyard. In line with the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative, a large percentage of the equipment fitted, including weapons and sensors, is indigenous, ensuring that the bulk of defence production is carried out by Indian manufacturing units, thereby creating jobs and increasing capacity in the country.
