The Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, laid the foundation stones for India’s first riverine lighthouses along the Brahmaputra River on National Waterway 2 (NW-2). The initiative aims to enhance navigation safety and improve infrastructure on the important inland waterway.

The proposed riverine lighthouses will help guide vessels navigating the Brahmaputra, particularly during night and low-visibility conditions, thereby strengthening inland water transport in the region. The project is expected to support safer movement of cargo and passenger vessels while boosting trade and connectivity in the Northeast.

National Waterway-2, which runs along the Brahmaputra River in Assam, is one of India’s key inland waterways. The development of riverine lighthouses marks a significant step toward modernizing navigation systems and promoting efficient and sustainable inland water transport.

The project aligns with the Government’s broader efforts to strengthen multimodal logistics and improve connectivity across the Northeast through inland waterways.
